How to Start a Blog? Complete How-to-Guide

how-to-start-a-blog
It’s been an year an half since I started blogging. The only advice I have for you is start sooner. Unless you are completely mortified and embarrassed by your first design you haven’t started on time.I would say you can do it, no matter how busy you are, you have no experiences in web design or knowledge of social media marketing what have you take the first step.First there is always a started point, and there is a learning curve. I started stepping into blogging in the year of 2013.I started with a trial run in SquareSpace. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out so well. I put off until 2015.In the fall of 2015 is when I finally decided I am going to jump in.I had no  prior experience in web design or graphic creation or social media marketing.Blogging is a very creative hobby. For me I find that writing my thoughts down in a post relaxes me. Its a great feeling to create and share something of value with other. If you are a novice you have stepped on the right blog post. This post is newbie’s guide to getting started with a new blog.
A good domain name is the identity of your website. Its the name by which your website would be known so chose wisely.Once decided register your domain. I registered mine at GoDaddy.Since I was a complete newbie when I started I opted for a beginners plan at Wix and later upgraded to premium.WIX has quality customer support but the only limitation is that you’re stuck with the theme you started out with. There is no way for you to upload an external theme. The hosting at six is pretty decent, I haven’t experienced server downtimes. For my food blog I started with a wordpress.com account and once I got comfortable I moved on to a self-hosted WordPress.

Blog Hosting

The advantage of a self-hosted wordpress is the flexibility to pick your theme, customize your layouts, affiliate marketing and advertising.I did make a mistake with my hosting on spiceyandsavory.com, trust me its a nightmare. You can use AWS but the learning curve with setting up your servers is steep.Other good choices are bluehost and hostgator which works really well with WordPress.I switches to iPage and am extremely dissatisfied with their service. The servers have downtime, they are slow and the customer service is very inefficient.I learnt it the hard way so take it from me, invest in a good hosting website, your blog quality depends on it.
Once you are done with the basics which include setting up your domain, your hosting , name servers get started on the skeleton of your website.Pick a theme for your website, don’t splurge like 100$ and so for a premium theme, get a decent theme with a good customization based on your budget.I spent some $25 on a theme for my food blog and I am really impressed by the features on it. As a part of setup you might also want to install some plugins.I will do a detailed post on which plugins to pick but for starters go for a SumoMe,BrokenLinkChecker and Wordpess Jetpack.

Now that you have written your first blog post go ahead and promote it.Where? Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, Linkedin, Pinterest.I have a tip for you.I have found that unconventional websites like quota and medium get some serious traffic and following. Research the topics of your blog posts and add them to threads.Create a profile on medium and start adding relevant blog posts.Avoid investing in Facebook ads because they are a complete scam.Remember more likes does not equal more customer engagements. Most of the user profiles at Facebook targeted through ads exhibit typical click farm behaviour. Use google analytics for accurate traffic analysis.
